Óbidos and Nazaré

On this Óbidos Nazaré tour from Lisbon, we visited Óbidos, a medieval town of Queens, a witness to weddings and royal baptisms, which was a wedding gift from King D. Dinis to D. Isabel.

Occupied by successive civilizations (as the whole country) stands on the steep summit of the majestic castle. Reminding those who visit it, other times when it was part of the defensive pentagon of the Portuguese kingdom, designed by the Templar Knights for the central area of Portugal.

The narrow streets, the alleys, and the whitewashed houses surround the village in a medieval atmosphere. The vibrant daily life with handicraft shops, taverns, and local markets let you immerse yourself in the local culture.

One of the most typical drinks you can enjoy is the ginjinha, a liqueur that infuses “ginja” berries (served in chocolate glasses). Land of the great Portuguese painter Josefa De Óbidos, the village stands between walls.

Our visit starts at the city gate, where we can see the 16th-century pillory (symbol of the county’s judicial autonomy).

Nazaré became famous worldwide by the giant waves surfed by Garret MacNamara. But what awaits us is a delicious lunch experience provided by fresh fish—grilled on the grill or in “Nazarene stew,” many options.

For those who enjoy it, the tasty seafood will not be missing. We walk a little along the waterfront to see the fish drying on the colorful “pancakes” (boards with net) at the end of lunch.

We go up to the “site” of Nazaré, where we enjoy the spectacular view of the beach, the fishing, and the recreational port. We visit the chapel of Memory and the Shrine of Our Lady of Nazaré. We will have the opportunity to see Nazarene women in their typical costumes: the seven skirts.

In the afternoon, towards Alcobaça, we will appreciate one of Europe’s most important Cistercian abbeys. The richness of the waters, the Alcoa and Baça rivers, and the need to populate the territory determined the place where, in 1153, the monks of the Cistercian order founded their magnificent monastery, protected by the first king of Portugal.

Recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO, the monastery also includes two medieval sculptural pieces of rare beauty. The tombs of Pedro and Inês, a love perpetuated by the great writer and poet Luís Vaz de Camões.

Before leaving we advise you to visit some shops with local handicrafts. We highlight the cheetah articles (printed cotton fabric characteristic of Alcobaça) made by a few artisans.

Our tour continues in Batalha, referring to Portugal’s independence at the end of the 14th century: Aljubarrota. Elected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória was built to fulfill a vow made by D. João I to the Virgin.

These families fostered an original type of communal rural Jewish life; however, they were open to different Jewish lifestyles and beliefs. Moreover, their crypto-Jewish ancestors secretly retained their faith since the Inquisition.

Many rural Jewish communities in this region of Portugal sought a better way of escaping from Spain after the Edit of 1492 made by the Catholic Monarchs. This mountain area was the perfect location, hidden from harassment and persecution. Plus, this area was dedicated to woolen goods, which they intensified with their arrival.

In conclusion, they came to a prosperous region of Portugal where they could work on woolen, cheese, milk, fabric, and cattle.

Discover a territory with significant Jewish traditions and heritage in Portugal. They started with small Jewish communes with around 50 Jews in the middle of the 15th century. After that, they became almost 200. We find local Jewish family names: Adida, Abenazo, Baruc, Faravam, Navarro, and Zacuto. They will become a reference in Portugal’s Jewish history.

They practiced their religion secretly inside their homes to avoid the Inquisition. The Portuguese Jews practiced this Hebrew culture, the Crypto-Judaism, or Marranos also called the B’nei Anussim.

Serra Arrábida Tour

On this private tour, you will visit Parque Natural da Arrábida, a 42-mile protected habitat in the district of Setúbal. That offers you some of the most stunning coastal scenery in Lisbon.

Fátima and Tomar Tour
